Newton

The town of Newton is known as an old-fashioned, walking downtown.

Newton is known as the County Seat, due to the location of the county’s administrative offices and court system. The Sussex County Courthouse is here, which was originally constructed in 1765.   Newton is situated about 60 miles northwest of New York City.

The Newton Town Green is a square that is the center of town.  There is ample parking, and it is walking distance to a beautiful shopping district with locally-owned retail businesses and restaurants. Historic Newton Theatre built in 1924 is also on Spring Street. Beautifully restored, it is a 605 seat performing arts center.

Newton is located in Kittatinny Valley, a segment of the Great Appalachian Valley. Newton’s land area drains into the Paulins Kill and Pequest Rivers, 2 rivers that are tributaries of the Delaware River. Because of its location in higher elevations in the northwest New Jersey Appalachian Mountains, it has a cooler climate, which indicates patterns of significant precipitation all year.  Because of this, the region is known as “Sussex County’s Snow Belt.”  Perfect for winter activities like skiing or snowboarding at the popular, nearby Mountain Creek Ski Resort.

Memory Park is located in town with 10 acres of outdoor space, a playground, basketball courts and the Newton Pool.  There are also Newton Country Club, Rolling Greens and Hidden Acres Golf Course for the golf enthusiast.

Newton Public School District serves Kindergarten-12th Grade.  The High School includes students from Andover Borough, Andover Township and Green Township.  There are also private schools in the area, including the Catholic Academy of Sussex County in Sparta and prestigious Blair Academy to the west in Blairstown. Sussex County Community College, an accredited 2 year public college is also located in Newton.

Newton offers plenty of housing options from starter to luxury homes, townhomes, condos & apartments and Senior housing. Newton Memorial Hospital is near town, and it also has several grocery stores, pharmacies, home improvement stores and many other retail stores and restaurants in close proximity.  Newton has it all!
